Children’s Program To Keep Healing After Vital Funding Boost

Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) received a welcome boost recently with the announcement of $2.25 million in State Government funding to extend The Jiji (Kids) Program for an additional three years, with Minister Don Punch MLA and Kevin Michael MLA visiting the PAMS Newman clinic to celebrate and acknowledge the meaningful work the program provides. This crucial program aims to enhance occupational and speech therapy services in the remote Martu communities of Jigalong, Punmu, Parnngurr, and Kunawarritji, accompanying our comprehensive and culturally appropriate health care services in the Western Desert Region.

The Jiji (Kids) Program is a groundbreaking initiative that deeply engages with the Martu community, involving families in interactive workshops on brain science, trauma, and healing, known as ‘brain wangka’s’. By incorporating principles from neuroscience, polyvagal theory, and child development, the program addresses trauma and supports the healing and regulation of children, families, and the wider community. Through close engagement with the Martu community, several tools have already developed which will help support young Martu people.

The announced funding will meet increases in service delivery costs, including the employment of a speech specialist and training and employment of additional Martu women in the communities to ensure the sustainability of the program.

Through the program, specialists will continue to travel regularly from Newman to these remote communities, ensuring access to PAMS clinics, and holistic, culturally appropriate health services.

PAMS CEO Robby Chibawe said the investment from the State Government is a significant step forward in addressing the health disparities faced by remote communities.

“Our remoteness creates challenges for us. Logistically it is difficult, and expensive”, he said.”

78 children have already been referred for the Jiji Program, with 35 currently halfway through therapy. A large majority of participating families have reported improved outcomes and feedback for the program has been overwhelmingly positive.
